Chapter Three

Travis bounced Hannah nervously on his lap. He could hear the rain pouring down outside and it covered any noises he might have been able to catch. There hadn't been any more howls since the first, so he supposed he should be thankful. But rationalizing did little to reassure him. The cartoon Hannah was only half-watching ended and an infomercial started. They didn't need any more kitchen gadgets, so he sighed and reached into the drawer next to him for the remote. When his fingers connected with cold metal instead of plastic,, he quickly jerked his hand back.

"Daddy?" Hannah asked him as he set her down next to him on the couch.

He peered into the drawer, slowly pulling out the small metal band. "Yes, baby?"

"Where's Puppy?"

Travis sat back down, twirling the ring between his fingers. Of all the things he'd thought Liam would keep in the little stand, jewelry wasn't one of them. Especially since he'd never seen him wear any except the silver chain he always had around his neck. "Call him Liam, honey. And he's outside."

"Shiny…" Hannah said, crawling across the couch cushions to look at the ring with him.

She reached for it and Travis let her touch it, though he made sure to keep hold of it so that she didn't try to accidentally swallow it.

"Think it belongs to Liam?" he asked her. He didn't expect Hannah to answer him but saying his thoughts out loud didn't make him feel so weird. The dogs came over to sniff too, their tails wagging as they considered if it was something new to eat.

"It's a little too small for Liam…" Travis mused.

"What is?"

Travis turned and smiled at him as Liam came through the door. He gave him a quick, assessing look. "You don't have any blood on you." He closed his mouth quickly and shook his head. That sounded really stupid.

"You were expecting me to get hurt?" Liam asked as he lifted Hannah into his arms and sat back down, placing her on his lap. "What've you got there?"

Travis held it up to him, expecting him to say something about not knowing it was—maybe losing it somewhere… Anything, but not a soft gasp as the color drained from his face.

"Liam?" he said quietly, his voice uncertain, as he closed his hand over the metal.

His icy blue eyes were fierce as he pressed his lips together. "You weren't supposed to find that. Put it back."

Travis scowled. "You left it in the drawer. I was looking for a remote. What's your problem? I thought you'd be happy that I found your ring."

Liam took a shuddering breath and blinked slowly. "It's not my ring."

"Then whose is it?" Travis asked him, looking down at the small circle. It was too big for Evangeline's dainty fingers and he'd never seen Samson wear jewelry.

Liam kept one hand on Hannah to balance her as he ran the other through his short hair. "Well, I was hoping it would be yours someday."

Travis looked up at him, sure he hadn't heard right.
